This introductory course is designed for absolute beginners. Students will acquire basic knowledge on the Japanese writing and phonetic systems, daily greetings, commonly used vocabulary and simple sentence structures. This course also provides great opportunities for students to have a basic understanding on the Japanese culture, as well as the Japanese linguistic and social patterns. By the end of the course, students are expected to be able to engage in simple conversation with native Japanese on topics such as self-introduction, brief introduction of the university campus and study schedules.

This foundation course is designed for students who have completed SUPJ1010 (Japanese 1A) or who have studied the language for not less than 20 hours. By the end of the course, students are expected to be able to communicate with native Japanese on a wider range of topics such as shopping, dining, personal interests, daily routines and sharing campus life.

Students will further develop their verbal, listening, writing and reading skills. They will also gain a deeper understanding on the Japanese culture and society. By the end of the course, students are expected to feel comfortable communicating with native Japanese regarding non-study related topics such as sharing personal feelings, plans/goals, asking for information, as well as to make thorough description with the use of adjectives.
