Introduction

The English-in-the-Discipline (EID) is a university-wide initiative for all HKBU students to learn about discipline-specific genre conventions and writing practices used in their fields of study. In its fabric, the EID can be seen as a complementary alternative to standard ESP (English-for-Specific-Purposes) courses offered in other UGC-funded public universities. Since 2017, the team have worked with subject experts from 19 departments across all 6 faculties and schools.

The EID service has two main goals:

  • 1. To identify the disciplinary variations in the genres of major English assignments, and
  • 2. To develop a system for teaching English in the various disciplines in a way that organically integrates ESP into each discipline’s subject content.

The EID service is provided to students by means of (a) discipline-specific writing & speaking workshops and (b) one-on-one and/or group tutorials. Since its inception in 2017, the EID has served 7,013 students.

Working with students

Since its inception in 2017, the EID has served 7,013 students. Starting from Semester 1, 2023-2024, EID will provide new service for deadline fighters who aim for high-quality assignment performance in their own disciplines. The team will provide tailor-made feedback files within three days and group/individual consultation service to help deadline fighters with their assignment writing.
